Kids' Vision & Myopia Management

Childhood myopia is climbing.
Catch it early. Slow it down.

Globally, around 1 in 3 children is now short-sighted, and the trend is projected to reach 1 in 2 by 2050. Screen time and reduced outdoor light are the biggest drivers — and Helderberg kids are no exception.

We offer paediatric eye exams from age 3, school-vision screening, and myopia-management options including specialised contact lenses, MiSight, atropine therapy, and orthokeratology. Spotting a vision problem before a child can verbalise it changes how they learn, read, and concentrate.

  • First eye test recommended before school starts
  • Annual exams once they are in glasses
  • Myopia-control options to slow progression
  • Screen-time + outdoor-light plans for parents

Frequently asked

The questions we get every week.

How long does a full eye exam take?

Roughly 30 minutes for adults and 20–30 minutes for kids. We never rush — if your eyes need more time we book longer slots.

Do you claim directly from my medical aid?

Yes, for most major schemes (Discovery, Bonitas, Momentum, GEMS, MedShield and others). If your scheme isn't on the list, WhatsApp us and we'll check before you book.

From what age can a child have their first eye test?

From age 3 we can do a full assessment, and we recommend a check before the start of formal schooling. Earlier if a parent or teacher has spotted something.

Do you do drivers licence eye tests?

Yes — quick, accurate and government-compliant. Walk in or pre-book to skip the queue.

Can I bring my own frame to fit new lenses?

Usually yes, provided the frame is structurally sound. We'll check it during your appointment and let you know if it's safe to keep.

I work on screens all day and my eyes are exhausted. Can you help?

That's exactly what the dry-eye assessment is for. We look at tear quality, screen distance, blink rate and lens type — and build a plan around it. It's rarely just one thing.

Do you offer myopia control for kids?

Yes — including MiSight contact lenses, atropine therapy and orthokeratology where appropriate. The right option depends on the child's age, prescription and lifestyle. We'll explain all of it during the exam.

How do I book outside trading hours?

WhatsApp any time — we reply the same morning. Or fill in the booking form on this page.
